Happy Days House

The Cunnigham House From Happy Days.

Location: Los Angeles, California, USA
Address:  565 N Cahuenga Blvd.
Date: June 2019
Website:  www.paramountstudiotour.com

Happy Days the popular television show ran for about 10 years after first airing in 1974.  It followed the life of Richie Cunningham (Ron Howard) and his friend The Fonz (Henry Winkler).  The show was filmed at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles so it is not surprising that when they were looking for a home to stand in as the Cunningham residence they found one just a few streets over from the studio.

Happy Days was filmed on Stage 19 of the Paramount Studios lot.  In the photo above, the red trolley is just about to pass the building.

If you take the Paramount Studios Tour, Stage 19 is located right next to the tour entrance building on Melrose Avenue.

Writing On Wall At Larchmont Cafe Gratitude.

On North Larchmont Avenue is Cafe Gratitude. After our Paramount tour we walked here for some vegan dishes.  A few streets further west is North Cahuenga Blvd.  The Happy Days house is located at number 565. The fictional house is supposed to be located in Millwaukee, Wisconsin at 565 North Clinton Drive.  At least they got the number right.

The Cunnigham Residence From Happy Days on Garbage Day.

Unlike some homes used in television or movies, this home has not changed much in the last 40 years so it was easy to recognize. Sunday and Monday are happy days. Tuesday and Wednesday are happy days. Thursday & Friday unfortunately appear to be garbage days.

The house was used for exterior shots during the shows run. We enjoyed our brief visit to relive some Happy Days memories with the Cunninghams and of course Fonzie living over the garage. We give it two thumbs up. "Aaaay!"

Crosby Street Ghost

Crosby Street In Manhattan Where The Movie Ghost Was Filmed.

Location: New York City, New York, USA
Address: 79 Crosby Street
Date: January 2019
Website:  www.firmdalehotels.com

Oh, my love, my darling  I've hungered for your touch.

Sam (Patrick Swayze) and Molly (Demi Moore) get attacked on a dark street in New York City.  Sam is killed but lives on as a ghost.  He tries desperately to let Molly know he is still around and enlists the help of psychic Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg) to help him.  This is the premise of the aptly named movie, Ghost.  Surprisingly Ghost was directed by Jerry Zucker who is better known for his work on comedies like Airplane! or the Naked Gun movies.

Afternoon Tea At The Crosby Street Hotel.

Sam & Molly are attacked on Crosby Street in New York City not far from where we once enjoyed tea at the Crosby Street Hotel.  When two men finally come to help Sam & Molly we are quite certain that they come running from the vacant lot where the hotel was built.  The photo above is of the rear entrance to the hotel on Lafayette Street.

In the movie, Sam & Molly walk down Crosby Street and notice a man lurking in the shadows.  We find out later that the man's name is Willie.  Willie quickly pulls a gun on Sam and as the two struggle the gun goes off.

We see Willie run off down the street and then see Sam run after him.  Sam turns back to Molly and is shocked by what he sees.

Lying in the street is Sam with a gunshot wound and Molly calling for help.  Sam is shocked and literally beside himself.  They would have been on the coblestone street somewhere near this mysteriously yellow puddle.  Sam soon realizes he is now a ghost.

102 Prince Street In Manhattan Where The Movie Ghost Was Filmed.

Sam & Molly's apartment is only about 3 blocks from where Sam was killed.  It is here at 102 Prince Street that Sam and Oda Mae Brown come to try and convince Molly that Sam is still around and watching out for her.

Their apartment is the fourth from the top.  The second window from the left is where the workers can be seen trying to pull a statue of Mary up to the apartment.

New York City is such a popular movie location that no matter where you go, you are probably walking through the ghosts of a movie shoot from the past.

On The Set of Jeopardy!

Jeopardy! Sign At Sony Pictures Studios.

Location: Culver City, California, USA
Address: 10202 Washington Blvd.
Date: June 2019
Website:  www.sonypicturesstudiostours.com

As part of our Sony Pictures Studio tour we were going to visit either the set of Wheel of Fortune or the set of Jeopardy!  The Sony Pictures Studio Tour is a walking tour of the studio grounds.  Today's set visit was Jeopardy!  Contestants are given answers and then must phrase their response in the form of a question.  So if the answer was "A Merv Griffin created game show that has been around since 1964".  The question would be "What is Jeopardy!?"

Wheel Of Fortune At Sony Pictures Studios.

The two game show sound stages are located right beside each other on the lot so we walked past the Wheel of Fortune stage to get to Stage 10 for Jeopardy!

Jeopardy! Contestants Row

Once inside we were face to face with the Jeopardy! contestants row.  Everyone in our group took turns pretending that they had what it takes to answer Jeopardy! questions.

Behind The Scenes On The Jeopardy! Set

As we stepped behind the panel we could see the tablets they use to write their final answers.   There are also lights at each position to let the contestants know who buzzed in first.

Jeopardy! Buzzer

The photo above is of one of the buzzers in its holder.

Alex Trebek Cut-out

Alex Trebek has been the host of Jeopardy! since 1984.  He has had some health issues recently but is fighting to keep going and he has the support of a legion of fans.

The Daytime Emmys Belonging to Jeopardy!

Jeopardy! has won 33 Daytime Emmys over the years.  There was a cabinet displaying the hardware.

Jeopardy! Trophies.

There were other awards on display such as the Jeopardy! college championship trophy.

A Jeopardy! set made out of Lego bricks.

In 1932 this Danish company was formed making interlocking bricks for children.  What is Lego?  There was a Jeopardy! set made out of Lego.

Mr T and Alex Trebek Dressed As Mr T

There was a photo of two Mr. Ts.  There was the Mr. T we know from The A-Team and the other Mr. T as in Trebek.  Both men were sporting lots of gold chains.

Maple Leaf Trebek Jersey.

There was a Toronto Maple Leaf Trebek jersey on display.  Alex is an avid sports fan and was born in Canada.  He wore this jersey during a video clue shoot.

Alex Trebek's Game Chart.

If you have ever watched the show and wondered what Alex is writing down during the show, we now know.  He has a chart of the board and he crosses out the answer once a contestant has given him the correct question.

The Set of Jeopardy!

Finally we had a chance to sit in the audience in front of the set.  The front row is for a group of judges who have to decide if a question was given correctly or if something needs changing during the show.  The big game board was up on the stage, but the set was dark as there was no taping that day.  The answer is "We did!"  The question is "Who had a good time going behind the scenes on the set of Jeopardy!?"

Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge

Leonard P Zakim Bridge Over Park

Location: Boston, Massachusetts
Address:  Zakim Bridge I-93
Date: September 2010
Website: www.leonardpzakimbunkerhillbridge.org

The Big Dig was an ambitious project in Boston.  It took the elevated roadways that ran through the city and moved them underground.  It cost billions of dollars and ran well over budget.  Construction started in 1991 and finally finished about 10 years later than anticipated in 2007.  Still, it was an example of long term thinking that changed the face of Boston forever.  We think for the better.

Rose Kennedy Greenway

As part of the project,  the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge was built over the Charles River and the Rose Kennedy Greenway (above) was built where the old highway once stood.  Both projects were named after prominent figures from Boston.  Leonard Zakim was a civil rights activist and Rose Kennedy was the mother of president John F Kennedy along with 8 other Kennedy children.

Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge

The Zakim Bridge has become a recognizable Boston landmark.  It was the widest cable stayed bridge in the world at one point.  In the movie Zookeeper, Kevin James climbs the bridge on the back of his gorilla friend Bernie.  They are trying to find the taxi Rosario Dawson is taking to the airport and stop her.  Thanks to the Zakim Bridge and the Big Dig getting to the airport in Boston is easier than ever.

North Washington Street Bridge & Zakim Bridge

We have stayed at the Marriot Residence Inn in Charlestown on more than one occasion and had a view of the Zakim Bridge from our room.  The closest bridge is North Washington Street Bridge and the Zakim Bridge is behind it.

We often took a shortcut through the Charles River locks to get from our hotel to the subway.  It was also more fun, especially when a boat was passing through.

A Close Up Look At The Zakim Bridge

You can also get a nice close-up view of the bridge by day.

Zakim Bridge in Boston At Night.

  And by night.

Zakim Bridge At Sunset.

When the sun sets the upside down Ys that hold the cable and support the bridge stand out against the sky.  The Zakim Bridge and parkland created by the Big Dig make walking around Boston a pleasant experience.  You almost forget that underneath your feet hundreds of cars are rushing through tunnels trying to get across the city.

Big City Nights (Da Funk)

Big City Nights Bus Stop

Location: New York, New York, USA
Address: 139 2nd Ave #1
Date: January 2019
Website:  daftpunk.com

Daft Punk caught the world's attention with their single Da Funk back in 1996.  It was a purely instrumental song with a driving beat and funky synthesizers.  The music video directed by Spike Jonze brought even more attention.  The video was a short film called Big City Nights. In the video, Da Funk played in the background behind the dialogue.

Orpheum Theatre where Stomp has played since 1994.

We were watching the music video for Da Funk and after the dog missed his bus (more on the video's plot later) we noticed something.   Down the street we could see a sign for the musical percussion peformance group STOMP.  In New York, STOMP has been performing at the Orpheum Theatre since 1994.  They are still going strong after more than 10,000 performances.

Deutsches Dispensary

We did some research and found that a large part of the music video was filmed in New York's East Village on 2nd Avenue near the Ottendorfer Library.  The building was built in 1883 and one part is the library and another part is the Deutsches Dispensary (pictured above).  The building does not make an appearance in the video but its bus stop does as do some of the surrounding buildings.

The video follows Charles the dog as he hobbles through the street on crutches.  All the while his boom box with a broken volume knob is blasting Da Funk.  Charles is not a real dog but an actor in a costume.  Daft Punk also like to hide behind costumes and usually appear in public dressed as robots.  Charles tries to take a survey, buys a two dollar book called Big City Nights and eventually runs into an old neighbour.

East Village Meat Market

Charles the dog runs into Beatrice inside a variety store and they walk out into the street.  Beatrice invites Charles to "come with" for dinner downtown.  Charles agrees.  They wait for a bus outside of the East Village Meat Market.  The gold door on the left looks about the same but the white door (pictured above) used to also be gold back in the 90s.

East Village Ukranian Restaurant

We know this is the right place as across the road is a restaurant.  You can see the words Ukranian Restaurant reflected in the window behind Charles.

A Bus Travels Along 2nd Ave. Just Like In Daft Punk's Da Funk Video.

A bus pulls up and Beatrice gets on.  Charles wants to follow her but sees a sign stating "No Radios. No Smoking. No Spitting".  Now he must choose between his music and a girl.   The bus closes its doors and drives away.  Charles hobbles down the street alone.
