Cambridge Ontario

The Grand River Cambridge.

Location: Cambridge, Ontario
Address: 13 Main Street
Date: August 2026
Website: www.cambridge.ca

Cambridge, Ontario was formerly the city of Galt. We visited in order to explore some of the art and architecture the city has to offer.

Old Galt Library.

We parked across the street from the old Galt Post Office which was built in 1887. Today the building serves as a bookless public library. Everything is one hundred percent digital.

Galt Bridge Cambridge.

We walked up to Main Street. This is where the Galt Bridge crosses the Grand River. Fans of The Handmaid's Tale television show may expect to see a procession of Handmaids coming across the bridge as in season 3 episode 4.

Thirteen Main Street Cambridge.

We ate in a restaurant called Thirteen. It is located in an historic building at 13 Main Street. It had a wooden bar.

Stained Glass Peacock At Thirteen Cambridge.

It had a stained glass window of a peacock.

Flooded Main Street Cambridge.

In May of 1974 the Grand River flooded Main Street. Thirteen had a photo of a police officer determined to keep watch despite waist high waters.

Central Presbyterian Church Cambridge.

After lunch we walked over the bridge and past the Central Presbyterian Church which was built in 1882.

Ferguson Cottage Cambridge

We walked down the other side of the Grand River. We reached Ferguson Cottage which is home to the Galt Horticultural Society. This group is responsible for maintaining the gardens along the banks of the Grand.

Cambridge Sculpture Garden.

A little further along we entered the Cambridge Sculpture Garden. There were many works of art in the garden such as the piece above called Easy To Assemble. It looks like the sides of a house floating in the air. Behind the artwork is an oak tree that has been around for over 140 years. The tree could be having a mid-life crisis as oaks can live for up to around 300 years.

Toad Touch Cambridge.

Another art exhibit was called Toad Touch. The town was looking to raise funds in order to bring the second toad to its place in the garden. We made a small donation and hope that the next time we visit there will be a pair of toads to touch.

Pedestrian Bridge Over the Grand River Cambridge.

We took the pedestrian bridge back across the Grand River to where we had parked our car.

Bodies Mural Cambridge Ontario.

Behind us in the parking lot was a mural of two bodies painted on the wall. Cambridge was an interesting place filled with modern art, architecture and history.

Swiss Chuchi

Swiss Chuchi Restaurant

Location: Zurich, Switzerland
Address: Rosengasse 10, 8001
Date: April 2025
Website: hotel-adler.ch/en/swiss-chuchi-restaurant/

Dishes of melted cheese have long been a Swiss tradition. Switzerland is famous for both fondue and raclette. When in Zurich, one of the best places to get your melted cheese is at Swiss Chuchi Restaurant.

Heidi The Cow Hotel Adler Zurich

The restaurant is attached to Hotel Adler. On a balcony overlooking the outdoor restaurant seating, stands Heidi the cow. Heidi was part of a 1998 art project where hundreds of painted cows were placed around the city.

Swiss Chuchi Cow Placemat.

Heidi has become quite famous in her own right. The restaurant has even chosen to feature her on their placemats.

Cowherd And Clock At Swiss Chuchi

The restaurant also had some interesting decor. The Swiss are known for their elaborate and accurate clocks. The little man is wearing a traditional cowherder outfit of the Swiss Alpabzug. This is the time when the dairy cows come down from the mountains. Then the cheese making can begin!

Swiss Chuchi Fondue Pot

Our fondue arrived in a hot pot. It was a mix of several cheeses with white wine,
cherry liquor and garlic. There were mushrooms mixed into the cheese by our request. We also had a plate of vegetables and bread to dip into this delicious concoction.

Swiss Chuchi Accordion Player

We dipped and dipped our long thin forks into our seemingly bottomless fondue. A little accordion player watched us from the ledge beside our table.

Heidi The Cow At Swiss Chuchi Zurich.

After finishing all of our fondue we were very full and very content. We waved goodbye to Heidi and wandered out to explore the streets of Zurich.

Halifax Ice Cream

Cows Ice Cream Napkin.

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
Address: 1709 Lower Water St #108
Date: July 2025
Website:  thefogcompany.com

On the east coast of Canada, one of our favourite things to eat is ice cream. Thankfully, there is no shortage of vendors to choose from. These are a few of the places that we visited near the waterfront in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Cows Halifax Waterfront Location.

Cows ice cream was founded in Prince Edward Island in 1983. They have since expanded to other provinces and there is a Cows located on the waterfront in Halifax. There are many flavours to choose from and you can get a good, simple cone or cup.

Doctor Moo Postcard From Cows

They also have lots of cow merchandise such as t-shirts and parody postcards.

The Fog Company Gimme Smore

If you want something a little crazier, then you want to visit The Fog Company. Each ice cream comes with a fog of cotton candy. The Gimme Smore (above) has chocolate ice cream covered in fudge and marshmallow. The huge cotton candy fog hangs off of the cone. These creations require some skill to eat without dropping any ingredients.

Seas The Day At The Fog Company.

Our favourite was Seas The Day which comes in a cone covered in fog. It is vanilla ice cream with a mermaid's tail and an edible paper whale sticking out of it.

A Grey Seal Gives A Look Near Brier Island.

Fog and whales reminds us of the whale watching we did from Brier Island. It was about a 3 to 4 hour drive from Halifax. We feared we may not see anything due to the thick fog. It cleared up just in time for us to catch a few whales, along with this grey seal (above) before our tour was finished. Back at the Brier Island Whale Watching restaurant we got huge cups of ice cream that really hit the spot.

Carousel Horse At Creme Halifax

Back on the waterfront in Halifax we visited a dessert spot called Creme. They had lots of fancy treats.

Strawberry Mousse At Creme Halifax.

This time we had a strawberry mousse that looked like a strawberry.

Peace By Chocolate Wrappers.

Since ice cream does not travel well, we bought some souvenir chocolate from Peace By Chocolate with some very Canadian wrappers. Peace By Chocolate is also located on the waterfront.

Dairy Bar Halifax

There is a list of some places to enjoy ice cream or other sweets while in Halifax. Up near the Halifax Public Gardens you will find Dairy Bar. They usually had a lineup so we didn't get a chance to try it during our visits. The only thing that stops us from having more ice cream is time.

La Felicita

La Felicita Paris France

Location: Paris, France
Address: 5 Parv. Alan Turing
Date: May 2023
Website: www.lafelicita.fr

La Felicita is the largest food court in Europe. It features a variety of Italian eateries. Where would it be located?  In a former train depot in Paris, France of course.

Trains Inside La Felicita Paris

The former train depot was named la Halle Freyssinet and fell into disrepair when it closed in 2006.  It was formally re-opened by French President Macron in 2017 as Station F. The F is for Freyssinet.  There are still some old trains inside the eating spaces. These days the trains are covered in artwork and hanging lights.

Ice Cream Train La Felicita

There were also some trains that you could go inside.  The train above had an ice cream shop inside.

Big Mamma's Disco Ice Cream La Felicita.

The ice cream shop had a disco ball inside to make everything even more fun. They also had Big Mamma cookbooks for sale. The Big Mamma group owns and operates many restaurants across Europe including La Felicita.

Lots of Space In La Felicita

La Felicita takes up 48,000 square feet of space. The rest of the almost 370,000 square foot Station F is taken up by offices for small business start-ups.

L'Arc At Station F

Outside the main entrance to Station F stands the giant legs of L'Arc. L'Arc stands about 36 feet tall. La Felicita is located at the opposite end of Station F.

Painted Train Inside La Felicita

Back inside La Felicita we decided to figure out what we wanted to eat and found a seat in between the trains and plants and hanging art.

Magnum PI At La Felicita.

The restaurants are all cashless and you have to scan a QR code to order and pay from a menu. This one restaurant had France's favourite private investigator holding a giant ice cream on a stick. It was Magnum holding a Magnum.

Back To The Fefe. Karaoke At La Felicita.

La Felicita also hosts many event nights and often has deejays and other performers. The night we visited it was up to the crowd to entertain us. We visited on Karaoke night and were surprised by the mostly English music selections.

A Wall Of Drinks At La Felicita.

There are plenty of drink and food options. One restaurant had a brightly lit wall highlighting its drink selection.

Pleasure Inside La Felicita.

Anyone can come inside and enjoy the decor of La Felicita. You don't have to eat or drink. If you find yourself passing this neighbourhood of Paris be sure to check out how new life has been brought to this giant space.

De Waag Doesburg

De Waag Doesburg

Location: Doesburg, Netherlands
Address: Koepoortstraat 2-4
Date: May 2024
Website: waagdoesburg.nl

De Waag means the weigh house. Across the Netherlands, these were large public buildings and they contained scales used to weigh goods. When goods came into town they would be weighed and taxes could also be imposed. These buildings were very common prior to there being an international standard for weights as different towns might use a different method of weight measurement. De Waag in Doesburg has been around since 1478 and the metric system was not around until about 1790.

De Waag Doesburg Giant Weighing Scale

Inside De Waag one of the giant scales can still be found hanging from the roof.

De Waag Oerblond Hanzebier.

De Waag in Doesburg also claims to have the distinction of being the oldest operating restaurant in the Netherlands. This is because the owner of the weigh house also had a monopoly on foreign beers and ran a pub from the same facility. We tried their De Waag Oerblond Hanzebier.

De Waag Tap Specials

De Waag offers many beers on tap. They also offer what is known as Trappist beer. La Trappe in the Netherlands has been producing beer since 1884.  The beer is brewed under strict conditions. It is brewed on the grounds of a Trappist monastery either by or under the supervision of the monks that live there. The monks cannot profit from the beer production so any profits in excess of what they need is given to charities. The monks are monastic which means they are devoted fully to spiritual work.

De Waag Doesburg Interior.

The high ceilings in the restaurant were once needed for the large weighing scales but now just enhance the interior.

De Waag Doesburg Chandelier

We enjoyed a nice meal sitting under one of the giant chandeliers. We did order a beet burger and received a beef burger, but we may have fared better if we ordered in Dutch.

Looking Down The Street From De Waag Doesburg.

You don't have to know someone who was born there or briefly lived in the town to visit Doesburg. It is a nice little town in its own right and has been a city since 1237. While you are there you can eat at Netherland's oldest restaurant De Waag.
