Cambridge, Ontario was formerly the city of Galt. We visited in order to explore some of the art and architecture the city has to offer.
We walked up to Main Street. This is where the Galt Bridge crosses the Grand River. Fans of The Handmaid's Tale television show may expect to see a procession of Handmaids coming across the bridge as in season 3 episode 4.
We ate in a restaurant called Thirteen. It is located in an historic building at 13 Main Street. It had a wooden bar.
It had a stained glass window of a peacock.
In May of 1974 the Grand River flooded Main Street. Thirteen had a photo of a police officer determined to keep watch despite waist high waters.
After lunch we walked over the bridge and past the Central Presbyterian Church which was built in 1882.
We walked down the other side of the Grand River. We reached Ferguson Cottage which is home to the Galt Horticultural Society. This group is responsible for maintaining the gardens along the banks of the Grand.
A little further along we entered the Cambridge Sculpture Garden. There were many works of art in the garden such as the piece above called Easy To Assemble. It looks like the sides of a house floating in the air. Behind the artwork is an oak tree that has been around for over 140 years. The tree could be having a mid-life crisis as oaks can live for up to around 300 years.
Another art exhibit was called Toad Touch. The town was looking to raise funds in order to bring the second toad to its place in the garden. We made a small donation and hope that the next time we visit there will be a pair of toads to touch.
We took the pedestrian bridge back across the Grand River to where we had parked our car.
Behind us in the parking lot was a mural of two bodies painted on the wall. Cambridge was an interesting place filled with modern art, architecture and history.
